P�draic Mac Piarais [P.H. Pearse] Iosag�n agus Sg�alta Eile. Connradh na Gaeilge [Gaelic League], Dublin 1907, first edition, with coloured and other illustrations by Beatrice Elvery [later Glenavy]. Small 8vo brown wrappers with coloured design, covers attached with tape, otherwise a good copy. Inscribed in ink on front end paper by Pearse, '� Ph�draic Mac Piarais, / 17 Eanair 1908'. From the collection of Eamon Martin (1893-1971), a founder member and former Chief of Staff of Fianna Eireann, and a member of the original Executive of the Irish Volunteers, with an envelope bearing his name. In 1916 he led the attack on the magazine fort in the Phoenix Park, and also fought in the North King Street area and in Church Street, where he was shot in the lung. He opposed the Treaty, and after the fall of the Four Courts he was held in a cell with Liam Mellows for 6 months until Mellows' execution in December 1922. Throughout his life he remained active in Republican organisations, and set up the Kilmainham Jail restoration committee, to which he was a generous donor. He is believed to have originated the proposal for a Garden of Remembrance at Parnell Square, and gave a large donation to start the project. Books inscribed by Pearse are now rare.
