Hawks, 154 tinted lithographed plates and maps (of 155, lacks one facing p.268 in volume 1, the 15 folding "Charts" loose in portfolio, one split at fold), 352 full-page star charts in volume 3, title to volume 1 loose, light toning, publisher's cloth, all rebacked preserving spine to volumes 2 and 3, and fragment of spine to volume 1, rubbed [Hill 1332; Nissen ZZI, 3132; Sabin 30968], 4to, Washington, A.O.P Nicholson, Printer, 1856FootnotesA report based on the journals and papers written by members of the naval expedition, led by Perry, to induce the Japanese Government to enter into diplomatic relations with the United States, which "contributed to the collapse of the feudal regime and to the subsequent modernization of Japan" (Hill), and rise of the Meiji Period. Handsomely illustrated with tinted lithographic views, it includes a narrative of the voyage, with two chapters devoted to China and Hong Kong, and reports on natural history (with coloured ornithological plates) and, volume 3 is devoted to "Observations on the Zodiacal Light... with Conclusions from the data".
