Manuscript Document Signed, 2 pp, small folio, [Cuzco?, Peru], 1570, in Spanish, ordering an administrator to assign a gift of 300 Indians to a landowner. Toned, old dampstaining with loss, mostly to blank margins, but also affecting text with loss of about a dozen words. The Viceroy of Peru orders the gift of the labor of 300 Indians to a wealthy landowner and advises where and on what terms the workforce should be obtained. Francisco de Toledo, son of the 3rd Count of Oropeia, was the third cousin of Emperor Charles V, and was appointed as 5th Viceroy of Peru in 1569. As Viceroy, Toledo was a hard-working legislator and statesman of considerable ability. He ordered that the native population should be governed by chiefs of their own race, and fixed the tribute to be paid by them whilst also abolishing the old system of forced labor. He did however decree that one seventh of the adult male population of each village should be obliged to work for the Spanish.
