[Philadelphia] Barralet, John James View of the Water Works at Centre Square Philadelphia Stipple engraving. Philadelphia: H. Quig, [ca. 1830s]. Fourth state. Stipple by Cornelius Tiebout Snyder, Mirror of America, 110. Center Square, now the site of City Hall, was one of five squares, essentially municipal parks, laid out in the original plan of Penn's green town. Around the year 1800, Benjamin H. Latrobe designed the pump house here depicted to take water from the Schuylkill River to be distributed throughout the city. The pump house was in operation until 1815, when it was supplanted by the new Fairmount Waterworks. The building was taken down in 1828.
