Beschreibung:

ca 1790, possibly by Henry and James Reynolds of pine with walnut veneers having mahogany and parcel-gilt inset moulded and indented corners. The scalloped and pierced crest has a carved, parcel-gilt phoenix perched on a c-scroll; below, an appropriate scalloped pendant. In an old mellow refinish; glass appears to be original; 32.75" high x 21" wide. James and Henry Reynolds (w. 1768-1794) were the sons of John Elliott a Philadelphia maker who attached maker's labels to his pieces. While unlabeled, this glass is smaller, but very similar to one listed in Downs, American Furniture at Winterthur: Queen Anne and Chippendale Periods, 1952, Plate 263. The Elliott and Reynolds' attribution is based on the parcel-gilt indented corners; although a Federal period piece, it has a carved phoenix rather than the more traditional eagle. Christie's (January 21, 2006, Lot. 669) sold a pair of larger but very similar mirrors attributed as English; but with the same rococo characteristics and an additional gilt vine detail on the crest. Condition: Appropriate age cracks; some striations on mirror.
