Medicinia Mentis, sive artis inveniendi praecepta generalia Bound with: Medicina Corporis, seu gogitationes admodum probabiles de conservanda sanitate Leipzig: J. Thomam Fritsch, 1695. 4to. Both works issued and bound together, each with its own title-page, and pagination; first leaf a half-title serving as a general title for both works. Illustrated with 60 woodcuts in text, and printer's device on title-page. 20th-century three-quarter brown calf over old marbled paper-covered boards, red morocco spine label, boards scuffed and lightly worn; front and rear hinge repaired; moderate toning and spotting to text; head of last leaf torn away, with losses to printing; library stamp on verso of first title-page. From the library of David Hume, and with his armorial book-plate on verso of first title-page. Ehrenfried Walther von Tschirnhaus (1651-1708) was a German mathematician, physicist, physician, philosopher, and lens maker. Considered by some as the inventor of European porcelain, he met with and corresponded with Spinoza, Leibniz, and many other philosophers. David Hume (1711-1776) was one of the preeminent figures of the Scottish enlightenment and British philosophy.
