PHIPPS, Constantine John (1744-1792). A Voyage Towards the North Pole . London: Bowyer and Nichols for J. Nourse, 1774. [ Bound with :] HORSLEY, Samuel (1733-1806). Remarks on the Observations Made in the Late Voyage Towards the North Pole, for Determining the Acceleration of the Pendulum . London: B. White and P. Elmsley, 1774. A presentation copy of the first edition of Constantine Phipps’s official account of his voyage to the North Pole, bound with Samuel Horsley's rare pamphlet. Phipps led the ships Racehorse and Carcass north beyond Svalbard, but was turned back by sea ice before reaching the Pole. There is a manuscript note on the front endpaper: "The gift of the author afterwards Lord Mulgrave." Presumably the presentation was to Sir William Burrell, a director of the South Sea Company, whose arms decorate the binding. Phipps became Lord Mulgrave in September 1775. The important pamphlet by Samuel Horsley gently corrects certain errors of measurement reported during the journey. According to Sabin, this work is “an important addition to nautical science which does honor to its author,” and the Horsley pamphlet "ought to be annexed to every copy of Captain Phipps's book." Hill 1351; Sabin 62572 & 33056. Two works bound together, quarto (282 x 235mm). 12 engraved folding plates, 3 engraved folding maps, many folding tables (some spotting and pale browning; final map printed on tissue). Contemporary calf, with gilt arms of Sir William Burrell (rebacked, text block cracked, wear and repair to corners, ). Provenance : Sir William Burrell (1732-1786, antiquarian; binding and inscription) – Henry Sotheran Ltd.
