Beschreibung:

Trip to the Middle East, 12th February - 17th April 1946. Photograph album belonging to a soldier in the British Army, from a trip to Palestine in February-April 1946. The album leaves are mounted with some 150 photographs documenting the trip in chronological order, with captions in handwriting (English) and many illustrations, including caricatures of the soldier (the album's owner), small illustrations of landscapes and people he met during the trip, a map marked with the trip's itinerary, a map of Palestine, and more. Some of the illustrations are initialed. The journey documented in the album begins in Neuengamme (a quarter of Hamburg, Germany; location of a Nazi concentration camp liberated by the British Army in May 1945), continuing to Toulon, France (photographs of the warship Richelieu), Malta and Alexandria. Most of the photographs are from Palestine, including photographs of Tel Aviv and Jaffa (the beach, Mograbi Cinema, Allenby Street, the Clock Tower, the street market in Jaffa and more), Tiberias and Safed, Haifa, the Dead Sea, Jerusalem (the Mount of Olives, view from the university on Mount Scopus, Hadassah Hospital, view from the roof of the Anglo-Palestine Bank, the Tower of David, streets in the Old City, the Dome of the Rock, the Western Wall and more). The journey ends in Egypt (the pyramids of Giza, a trip to the Nile, Cairo and more), from where the soldier returned to Toulon. Apparently he served in the RAF Transport Command. The album is bound in a fine wooden binding, with copper spine and corners. On the front binding is an etched mosque illustration. Total of about 150 photographs. Size varies (most are approx. 12X11.5 cm). Album: 25X33 cm. Good condition. Provenance: Collection of Dr. Simon Cohen.
