Silver gelatin photograph, 6.75 x 10.25 in., of an aged gentleman smoking a pipe pencil identified on verso as "'One Shot Shepherd' / Telluride Colo." Signed lower left in print "Walker Art Studio." Former Confederate guerrilla & James gang member, George Shepherd reportedly killed Jesse James at Short Creek (near Joplin, MO) on November 2, 1879. News reports indicate that Shepherd was found at a hotel with a bullet wound in his leg after the incident. He stated that he had killed James outright in a gun fight and was wounded by Jim Cummins while escaping from the rest of the gang. Previously, Shepherd had been arrested for his part in the Russellville, KY bank robbery in 1868, serving prison time as a result. Following a fall-out with Jesse James and James Anderson brother of "Bloody Bill" Anderson, for killing his nephew Ike Flannery, Shepherd reportedly cut Anderson's throat on the lawn of the state capitol in Austin, TX. Shepherd became a sworn enemy of James and claimed that he was working with a law enforcement official to capture members of the James gang. His story of the gun fight and killing of James remains a mystery, as the famed outlaw was shot and killed three years later by Robert Ford in St. Joseph, MO, on April 3, 1882. Condition: Some slight surface damage in lower left corner (small hole/tear in print), plus few other surface scratches. Few short tears along perimeter. Remnants of glue on verso, likely previously mounted.
