Gay, poet and dramatist, was a member of the Scriblerus Club, and perhaps best known as the author of the ballad The Beggar's Opera (1728). In this copy Gay's ownership inscription, neatly written on a stub preceding the first title, is dated '1714', the year in which he published the pastorals The Shepherd's Week, a parody of arcadian life and poetry. Provenance: John Gay (1685-1732); two other early ownership inscriptions on first title, erased in ink; William Franks (ex-libris on front pastedown).
