Manuscript map of the island of Anouan, in the Comoros, oriented to the West, text in Dutch, red, brown and black inks and coloured washes on paper, (480 x 405mm), with compass rose, rhumblines and scale bar, showing soundings, safe anchorages, buildings in elevation and mountain ranges. Modern purple cloth slipcase. A FASCINATING VOC CHART of one of the four islands of the Comoros, drawn up by Pieter Pley, a cartographer for the East India Company at Batavia. It is likely that this detailed and accurate map was drawn up, based on information from the De Burgh van Leijin , a ship that anchored in Mutsamudu in 1684 after a storm. The map itself marks the burial ground of the victims of the storm, and the house built by survivors. A decorative chart, it is also highly informative, the inscriptions along the coast marking 'steep and rocky coast', 'coral and sand ground' and shifting sands. Mutsamudu is labeled, 'the principal town or capital of Anouan' and Domoni, 'a village with a fortification'.
