Five maps are drawn from Atlas portatif, universel et militaire by Giles Robert de Vaugondy, Paris 1748; one, with the Rose of the Winds, is signed by Francesco Sesone.Five are a rare and unusual Italian edition of the Sanson Continents: Europe, Asia, Africa, South America, North America. Old World Auctions: “This is an uncommon Italian version of Nicolas Sanson’s last map of North America (1666). It presents California as an island with an indented northern coastline, which is labeled Nuovo Albion. The Great Lakes cover most of Nuova Francia and are open-ended in the west. The R. di Nort flows westward from a large lake in Le Apaches country, and empties into the Gulf of California. This unusual map is not listed in Burden, McLaughlin or any other of the North American references we consulted.” See, Old World Auctions, Sale 142 Wednesday, November 28th, 2012, Lot 98.The lot is offered with a valid license.
