POLLARD, James (1792-1867). Coaching Subjects . London: 1819-1823. 2º (503 x 376mm). 6 hand-coloured aquatint plates by and after Pollard, sizes varying slightly, tipped into an album, interleaved. (First plate with small repaired tear at upper margin, the second with some scattered stains.) Brown quarter morocco with blue morocco gilt cover label, gilt edges; brown buckram slipcase. POLLARD’S ACCOMPLISHED TRAVELLING SCENES, published as separate engravings without title-page or running title. The first two, ‘Cottagers Hospitality to Travellers’ and ‘Stage Coach Passengers at Breakfast’ have the imprint of R. Pollard and Sons and date 27 March 1819; the pair are listed by Siltzer (p. 214) who notes that they were reissued in 1820 and 1824. The first of the two is also in the Mellon collection (Melon/Snelgrove 35, p. 137). ‘Patent Stage Coach’ has the Pollard imprint and date of 1 June, 1819, but ‘Stage Coach’, dated 1 November 1822, differs in being engraved by Dubourg and published by J. Watson ‘Tandem’ and ‘Four in Hand’ are two of three plates engraved by J. Gleadah and published by J. Watson 1823 (Siltzer p. 216).
