Roberson (Hammond) The Select Vestry or Parish Committee... Parish Business... Management of Roads...Now first published in reference to the proceedings in Parliament in regard to the Poor Laws..., half-title, advertisements on verso of last f., slightly foxed and browned, original blue wrappers, edges chipped, label removed from upper cover, stitched as issued, spine torn with loss, [not in COPAC], 8vo, J. Hatchard, 1818. ⁂ Rev Hammond Roberson (1757-1841), is said to have been the model for Matthew Helstone in Charlotte Brontë's novel Shirley. The irascible vicar established a boys' boarding school, Healds Hall, at Liversedge, West Yorkshire. He only met Charlotte once, but his reputation as staunch anti-Luddite and right-winger went before him, and the character of the Reverend Helstone is likely to have been based on the many stories in circulation about him.
