POTTER FAMILY]. DICKENS, CHARLES. The Life and Adventures of Martin Chuzzlewit. London, n.d. Illustrated by Hablot K. Browne. 8vo, contemporary half calf, gilt-decorated on spine; some scattered foxing. Later edition, POTTER FAMILY COPY, with bookplate of Edmund Potter (Beatrix's grandfather), Camfield Place. With pencil inscription on verso of front free endpaper which reads: "Bought from Capt. Duke at Castle Cottage. Beatrix Potters copy - inherited from her father - with his bookplate. H.W." -- [HALIBURTON, THOMAS CHANDLER]. The Clockmaker; or the Sayings and Doings of Samuel Slick...new edition. London, 1848. 8vo, contemporary half calf, spine gilt. Bookplate of Thomas Taylor Sawrey, Hawkshead. Thomas Taylor was probably John Taylor's father, and this book likely came from John Taylor's library. John Taylor ("Old John Dormouse") owned the Sawrey village general shop and was the dedicatee of Ginger & Pickles (the printed dedication reads: "With very kind regards to old Mr. John Taylor who 'thinks he might pass as a Dormouse;' (Three years in bed and never a grumble!]."). A pencil inscription on the front free endpaper reads: "Bought from Capt. Duke. Beatrix Potters copy - no doubt bought by her at some local sale. HW." The initials and handwriting on both volumes is by Wilkinson of Windermere who made many purchases of Potter items from Capt. Duke circa 1966. (2)
