Lot of 2. Mifflin, Thomas (1744-1800). President of the Supreme Executive Council (1788-1790). DS, dated Oct. 4, 1788. Measures 7.5 x 6 in. E. Wellmore engraving from a C. Stewart painting of Thomas Mifflin with his facsimile signature, printed by H. Quig. Measures 6.5 x 9.5 in. Thomas Mifflin was a distinguished merchant and politician from Pennsylvania who served as a delegate and President of the Continental Congress, major general in the Continental Army, delegate to the Constitutional Convention, and first governor of the commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Mifflin participated in many scandals while he was the first Quartermaster General of the Continental Army. The wrongdoings tarnished his reputation and damaged his friendship with George Washington beyond repair. His exorbitant spending forced him to flee creditors in Philadelphia to Lancaster. He died, disgraced the next year. Condition: Very good, some toning of the paper on both items.
