Printed Souvenir Cotton Handkerchief Printed in red on a yellow ground, the handkerchief depicting the great horse match between the North and the South at the Union Course racing course located in Woodhaven, Queens, New York, dated May 27, 1823. It is noted as the most famous horse race in American history. The handkerchief is inscribed A Representations of the famous match race for 20,000 dollars aside between Mr. Van Ranst horse Eclipse and Mr. R. Johnson horse Henry. American Eclipse (representing the North) raced Henry (representing the South) in which Eclipse won best of three heats competition as 60,000 spectators watched. It has been noted in literary sources that this handkerchief was a foreshadowing of the Civil War. 27 3/4 inches x 31 1/2 inches. Literature: Esienberg, John.
