Private collection: A Chinese ceremonial axe head. Late Neolithic, Longshan culture style. The thinly cut slice of serpentine stone with tapered sides and a pierced suspension hole near the top is incised with a band of decoration and depicts a stylised scrolling face beneath, the stone being translucent spinach green in tone. Although several variations of these blades have been discovered, the function is as yet unknown but are thought to perhaps represent some kind of emblem or marker to denote a level of rank or status. 8.3 in (21 cm) length. Provenance: Formerly in the Alexander Taylor collection.
