Theodorus Gaza
Grammatica introductiva [Greek]; De mensibus. Apollonius Dyscolus: De constructione [Greek]. Herodianus: De numeris [Greek]. Venice: Aldus Manutius 25 December 1495Super-Chancery folio (302 x 201mm.), 198 leaves, a8 bβ-lλ82a8 b10 AΑ-LΛ8 MM4, woodcut headpieces and initials, Greek text, contemporary Venetian blind-tooled morocco, stubs from two pairs of ties, slight worming throughout (more at beginning and end), first few leaves slightly stained, lower corners of [2]a4-5 torn, upper joint cracked, foot of spine torn
FIRST EDITION of Gaza's influential Greek grammar, and one of the first products of Aldus Manutius's newly established press in Venice.
Plausibly composed while Gaza was teaching Greek in Ferrara in the 1440s, or possibly later while he was in Rome, it was certainly available by 1462 and circulated widely across Europe in the later fifteenth century in manuscript form, with several manuscripts being written England before the publication of the text by Aldus. Aldus added the grammatical tracts by Apollonius Dyscolus and Herodian but kept all the text in Greek, unlike his edition of Lascaris's grammar (printed earlier in 1495) which provided the text in both Greek and Latin, to facilitate learning, and was cheaper to buy.
Aldus printed several editions of Lascaris's grammar (see lot 112) but this was his only edition of Gaza's grammar, plausibly because he still had copies available for sale even in 1513 (see Botley, p.20). The fine contemporary binding on this copy shows that it was prized by its first owner.
LITERATUREISTC ig00110000; Aldo Manuzio tipografo 5; Renouard 4/2; UCLA 5; Botley, Learning Greek in Western Europe 1396-1529, Appendix 1:16
