PTOLEMAEUS, Claudius (2nd century). [Ceylon, Sri Lanka]. Duodecima Asie, Tabula, Taprobana Insul. Ulm, 1486. Woodcut map of Ceylon, colored in a contemporary hand, image 282 x 267 mm (403 x 553 mm sheet). Latin text on verso with illuminated initial "D." (Some minor losses repaired on verso, some minor marginal worming.) From the second edition of Ptolemaeus Cosmographia in the characteristic coloring, with the text reset on verso. Printed from the original blocks of the first edition by Leinhart Holle, the first Ptolemy atlas printed north of the Alps. A large depiction of Ceylon, surrounded by 19 smaller islands. The ancient Greeks called the island Taprobana, the Arabs called it Zeylan, or Serendib, and Tenarisin was its Indian name. The early Sanskrit form has revived in its current name Sri Lanka.
