Bologna: Alessandro Benaccio, 1572. 2 parts in one volume, 4º (223 x 148mm). Publisher’s device on both titles, woodcut diagrams, ornamental initials, large device on final verso. (Marginal repairs to title and two leaves following, paper fault in last two leaves.) 17th-century vellum, manuscript title on spine (covers slightly bowed, recased, new endpapers). Provenance : Philippo Neri, Bologna, ex Congregation of the Oratory (stamp on blank area of title). FIRST EDITION IN ITALIAN. The translator, Ercole Bottrigari (1531-1612), was an Italian scholar, mathematician, poet, music theorist and composer. He published books of madrigals. Much of his writing was dedicated to classical Greek music and the study of Greek mathematicians and philosophers. RARE ON THE MARKET. RBH records one sale in 1971.
