PUCCINI, Giacomo. Autograph letter to [his librettist, Luigi] Illica (apparently incomplete, first leaf only), n.p., n.d., one page, 4to ; and an autograph letter signed to Illica by [Puccini's sister] Ramelde Franceschini Puccini, Pescia, 8 April 1903, 6 pages, 8vo . A cri de coeur from Puccini to his librettist: 'My suffering is terrible, I can find no peace or respite'; the attentions of Giulio and Tito [Ricordi] provide some momentary consolation, but he exclaims 'How awful it is to live like this - without a heart to console or understand you! I wish I knew why I have piled up around me such ill-feeling, and why I am such a fixed object of misfortune and human unpleasantness!'. The letter of Ramelde is an extraordinary plea to Illica to intervene, together with Giulio Ricordi, in saving Puccini from a love affair: in doing so they will 'save his life and his reputation'. Luigi Illica (1857-1919) joined the Ricordi staff in 1892, and first collaborated with Puccini on Manon Lescaut .
