Beschreibung:

PUFENDORF, Samuel, Baron von (1632-1694). Sieben Bücher von denen Thaten Carl Gustavus Königs in Schweden. Nuremberg: Christoph Riegel, 1697. Seven parts in one volume, 2° (359 x 225mm). Double column in gothic type. Engraved frontispiece, 12 engraved portraits, 114 double-page plates, 16 folding, and one large folding engraved panorama of Stockholm. Engraved headpieces and initials. (Some worming affecting lower margins of parts 3 and 4, some waterstaining of lower margins in part 6, occasional small stains and holes in text, some spotting of plate and page edges, plate 20 with stains at lower margin, section 11 of the panorama more heavily inked, without [?]blank Hhhhh4 at end of the register.) Contemporary German speckled calf, gilt turn-ins, red and blue speckled edges (covers a little rubbed and scuffed, rebacked with old gilt spine laid down, new endpapers). Provenance : Neuman -- L. Lenards (late 19th-century inscriptions on title) -- Ivar Rooth (Chairman of the Bank of Sweden 1929-48, his retirement gift from the Bank of Denmark). FIRST GERMAN EDITION, SELDOM FOUND COMPLETE. Puffendorf's copious history of Charles X of Sweden (1622-1660) first appeared in a Latin edition of 1696 also published by Riegel. The plates do much to amplify the text recording Charles's extraodrinary, if in the end costly and short-lived martial exploits, and culminate in the 13-sheet panorama which shows his funeral procession through the streets of Stockholm. The engravers include S. Blasendorff, J. Boulanger, N. Cochin, L. Cordier, Dahlbergh, Grignon, F. de Lapointe, J. Le Poutre, N. Perella, N. Pitau, Richer, P. van Schuppen, and W. Swidde. Graesse V, 504; cf. Lipperheide Ci 47 (1729 edition).
