Lacking front blanks in vols I & III and blank R4 (vol I); vols I & III with titles laid down; rust-holes or paper flaws with tiny losses on 8 leaves; Virginia map, maps on 3H1 (vol III) and 3F3 (vol V) just shaved; vol III with last quarter of the text block toned; vol V with light dampstaining to upper inner corner of approx final third and 7 gatherings with marginal wormtrack; bindings rebacked with old spines laid down, some scuffing, corners worn. FIRST EDITION OF THE FIRST WORK, AND FOURTH EDITION of the Pilgrimage, issued contemporaneously as a supplement. Early issue of the Pilgrimes, with the rare first state of the additional engraved title dated 1624, and vol I the first issue state of G3 with the "Map of the Christian World" repeated, 2T6 incorrectly numbered, and the headline to p 704 reading "Hollanders lying devices..."; vol II includes the rare final colophon leaf. The Pilgrimage with the dedication to King Charles I is a second issue. Smith's map of Virginia is in Burden's 10th state. A generally excellent set one "of the fullest and most important collections of early voyages and travels in the English language" (Sabin). "This great geographical collection is a continuation and enlargement of Hakluyt's The Principal Navigations (including many accounts which had not been published before). At the death of Hakluyt there was left a large collection of voyages in manuscript which came into the hands of Purchas ... This fine collection includes the accounts of Cortes, and Pizarro, Drake, Cavendish, John and Richard Hawkins Quiros, Magellan, van Noort, Spillbergen, and Barents, as well as the categories of Portuguese voyages, and the expeditions of the Muscovy Company" (Hill 1403); Sabin 66682-66686; STC 20509, 20508.5.
