PUSHKIN, Alexander (1799-1837). Stikhotvorenija. Chast’ pervaja [-vtoraja]. [Poems. Part I [-II].] St Petersburg: at the Department of Public Education, 1829. The first two volumes of the first lifetime collection of verse, published under the careful watch of the censors. The volumes were welcomed by critics, who praised especially the organization of the poems by year allowing readers ‘to see the progress of Pushkin’s talent’ ( Severnoj pchele ). These two parts, printed in 1200 copies, were later followed by a third in 1832 and a fourth in 1835. RBH records only one other copy of both being offered at auction. With the half-titles (dampstained, crude repair to text or margins of several leaves, edges softened or frayed, some marginal tearing, 1: one leaf partly detached, small hole to another, occasional ink marks, 2: first quire partly detached and waterstained, occasional thumbing.) 19th-century Russian straight-grained crimson calf, patterned endpapers, boards and spine blind-tooled and gilt, inner edges gilt (hinges and corners rubbed, few old stains to boards). Provenance : 'E. Pavlovoj' (early ownership inscription on endleaves of vol. 1).
