(7 1/16 x 5 1/8 in.), citron morocco, gilt and inlaid red and green morocco wreath at center of covers, spine in six compartments, two gilt-lettered, the remainder with single gilt flower tool, board edges and turn-ins gilt, gilt edges (partly red-stained), a few deckle edges, by TRAUTZ-BAUZONNET, trace of wear to corners and extremities of spine, edges of binding slightly darkened, washed and pressed . Collation: A-F4 [F3 missigned "Dii"] (A1r title and woodcut, A1v-F4v text, F4v colophon: ...Imprimees a Paris en la rue neufue nostre Dame a lenseigne sai(n)t Jehan baptiste, Pres saincte Geneuiefue des ardans . 24 leaves, with signatures. Title in gothic type (210 mm.), text in bâtarde (83 mm.). 38 lines. Double column. Large title woodcut (90 x 73 mm.) of a man carrying a cradle, a woman holding a broomstick, two children, a dog and a cat. 8-line and smaller criblé initials, 2 smaller Lombard initials. THE ONLY RECORDED COPY OF THIS EDITION OF A MEDIEVAL SATIRE OF MARRIAGE, sometimes attributed to Antoine de La Sale (1388-c.1470), but probably of an earlier origin. This is the third known edition, preceded by two undated fifteenth-century editions, each recorded in one copy only, the first printed in Lyons c. 1479-80 (CIBN Q-27), the second in Paris byJ ean Treperel, before 25 October 1499 (CIBN Q-28). The title woodcut of the present edition is that of the Trepperel edition (reproduced in Rothschild, II, 1841), but the block is here considerably cut down, lacking the upper portion of the Trepperel cut, showing the broom of the wife's broomstick, the pillow of the cradle, and a background of trees on hills, and the left-hand portion, showing a horse, a sheep and a third child (whose hand can be seen clutching his father's arm in the present cut).
