RAINSFORD, W. S. The Land of the Lion. London: William Heinemann, 1909. First edition. Publisher's blue pictorial cloth gilt, top edge gilt. 9 x 6 1/4 inches; xxiv, 459 pp.; double-page map, frontispiece, plates, half-title. Extremities bumped, small puncture to spine, cloth a bit rippled, endpapers and half-title toned, bookplate to front pastedown. "Rainsford's 'sefari' trekked through British East Africa where a variety of game was bagged. After crossing the Mau Escarpment, the author's party hunted lion, buffalo and rhino, then elephant near Mt. Elgon. Later, rhino and buffalo were taken near the Guaso Nyiro. He remarked that shooting elephant with a .500 or .577 was outmoded--a .256 Mannlicher or .275 Mauser would do perfectly well. There are plenty of big game hunting adventures throughout" (Czech). Czech, Africa, pp. 229-230. C Estate of Arnold 'Jake' Johnson
