Manuscript document, 13.75 x 18 in. Lower left "This is a true coppy [sic] of all the Taxable property assessed to Col. M. Bozeman for the year AD 1860 in Clark County Arkansas." The inventory lists 57 pieces of property valued at nearly $38,000; 23 slaves (not listed by name), valued at $20,000, plus vehicles, livestock, etc. This form is for 1864 taxes, even though the inventory was originally compiled four years earlier. Michael Bozeman (1808-1883) was born in Georgia but moved to Alabama as a youngster of about 10. In 1827 he married Lucy Ann Browning and they moved to Arkansas in 1835 with a few children in tow. They would eventually have nine children. Bozeman would become a prominent citizen of the new capital of Clark County, Arkadelphia. He would serve in the legislature and become involved in the founding of Mt. Bethel Baptist Church. Bozeman built a house about six miles west of the town, a wonderful example of Greek Revival architecture that still stands today and is on the National Register. During the Civil War the "Skirmish at Arkadelphia" took place near this home. Michael is buried in a cemetery behind the house along with his wife, who followed him just three years later. Condition: Folds with a few separations starting. Toning.
