Rare early book of hours produced in Champagne for use in Lorraine [Book of Hours - France] Book of Hours, Use of Toul. Champagne, c. 1420-Small 8vo (13,7 x 9,8 cm): [ff., vellum, in Latin, written in black and red textura, writing area 7,5 x 6,0 mm, lines a page (traces of use, some ff. sl. soiled, some text ff. and illuminations rubbed, sm. spots, vertical margin sl. trimmed with min. loss of border decoration, some original tears sewn). Old (c. 1600?) calf, spine with raised bands, 2 orig. brass clasps, 3 paper flylvs at each end with ms annot. (leather missing at bottom of spine, rubbed, traces of use, tear with sm. loss at 1 flyleaf). Rare early book of hours produced in Champagne for use in Lorraine. Content/Text: Calendar (Jan.-June in Latin, 14th c..; July-Dec. in French, 15th c.); Small Hours of the Virgin (8 miniatures); Penitential Psalm and Litany of the Saints (1 miniature); Office of the Dead (1 miniature); and at the end, in French, a prayer "Croix en toy fut mon dieu pendu". On the (paper) flyleaves: "Oraison à Saincte Genevièfve"; "Oraison de Saincte Barbe"; "In principio erat verbum [...]" or the beginning of the Gospel of S. John. Illumination: miniatures in rectangular compartments (5,2 x 6,3 cm), above 4 lines of text, within full decorated floral borders (12,0 x 9,5 cm): Annunciation, Visitation, Nativity, Announcements to the Sheperds, Adoration of the Magi, Presentation in the Temple, Flight into Egypt, Coronation of the Virgin, King David playing the harp, a burying scene. Decoration: large floral borders, four-line pen-flourished initials with burnished gold, alternating one-, two- or three-line initials in blue pen or burnished gold, decorative line-ends in blue pen or burnished gold, indications in red. Localisation/Origin: Hours of the Virgin and Office of the Dead following the use of Toul; S. Gangolf (or Gengoul), patron of Toul, mentionned in the Litany of the Saints. Production by a Champagne workshop.
