Kentucky. General Assembly. Papers, Acts, And Resolutions, Of The Kentucky Legislature, Relating To The Existing War, Session Of 1861. [Fr]ankfort, Ky.: Kentucky Yeoman Office, 1861. 28,[1] pp. First edition. Original printed wrappers. A near fine, largely uncut copy of this rare and important work. The documents include letters from Confederate General Leonidas Polk to Governor Magoffin explaining the "military necessity" that has "required me to occupy" the sovereign soil of Kentucky. "I had information, on which I could rely, that the Federal forces intended and were preparing to seize Columbus, [Kentucky]." Gen. Polk promises to withdraw if Federal forces do the same. General Zollicoffer sends a similar letter. Kentucky's legislature passes resolutions demanding "Confederate invaders to withdraw their armed forces unconditionally" and asks Gen. Robert Anderson "a native Kentuckian, who has been appointed to command of the department of Cumberland, to repel them and urges Kentuckians to maintain neutrality not "from fear, but from love to all parts of the Union." However, the Legislature also orders the militia to prepare for action and declares it a felony for Kentucky's citizens to join the Confederate armed forces or to urge others to do so. A work of critical importance printed for legislators only while the secession of Kentucky was still a possibility. SABIN 37564. OCLC locates only two microform copies. Condition:NULL
