Title: Rare memorial brochure for Walter A. Starr, Jr. Author: Place: No place Publisher: Date: [1933?] Description: 8 pp. Illustrated with tipped in photograph. (8vo) 24x15.5 (9½x6"), four sheets, including printed wrapper, folded to form 8 pp. brochure. First Edition. Extremely rare memorial pamphlet for Walter A. Starr, Jr., San Francisco Lawyer and mountaineer. Starr, a life member of the Sierra Club, was well known for his hiking abilities. In August 1933, he failed to return from a month-long hike in the Minarets. The search that followed, which led to the eventual discovery of his body by Norman Clyde, is one of the most dramatic true tales of the Sierra exploration. His body was buried where it was found. Starr's final notes were compiled and edited by his father into "Starr’s Guide to the John Muir Trail and the High Sierra Region" which was published a year after his death by the Sierra Club. This book has been edited and revised many times and served hikers and climbers for many years as the standard reference to the trails of the Sierra. The memorial brochure, based on Starr's eulogy, contains a tipped-in print of the last photograph from Ediza taken by Starr. Copies of the brochure are archived in Vincent Butler's Collection, in Norman Clyde's Collection, and in the Bancroft Library. OCLC lists only two holdings - the Bancroft and the California Historical Society in San Francisco. There are no other known copies. Lot Amendments Condition: Wear and soiling to wrappers, toning near edges; some offsetting to recto of leaf with tipped-in photo, a light crease runs through all pages near top of brochure, photograph with a light crease and a few dots of foxing in the margins; very good. Item number: 278577
