.69 caliber smoothbore. 26" round barrel secured by two spring-retained barrel bands. SN: NSN. Bright finish, iron furniture, walnut stock. Lock marked with the usual {Spread-Winged Eagle} / US forward of the hammer and in three vertical lines at the tail SPRING / FIELD / 1854. Breech plug tang with the date 1855 date. Breech with the usual V / P / {Eagle Head} marks. Counterpane with a weak script cartouche that appears to be the JS of James Stillman. Musketoon is numbered 23 on the buttplate tang. The gun retains the original front band with saber bayonet lug and cut for the anti-rotation lug in the top of the barrel. Barrel with locating guide lug. The band has the alphanumeric mark B0 to mate the gun to the bayonet that was fit to it. Retains both sling swivels and the correct trumpet head ramrod which is full-length and threaded at the end. Only 1,030 of these scarce "engineer's carbines" were produced at Springfield, with 200 in 1847, 250 in 1848, 547 in 1855 and 33 in 1856. Of those, 228 were later altered to "artillery" configuration for cadet use, leaving only 802 in their original configuration. With the calendar year 1854 lock, this was probably one of the early production guns for 1855, of which 80 were made for the state of New York. A very scarce and nice condition example of a rare US martial long arm. An appropriate bayonet for this gun is available in this sale as well. Condition: Very Good to Fine. Metal with a medium pewter patina showing scattered surface oxidation and some minor surface roughness and minute light pinpricking. Buttplate more moderately oxidized. Markings clear in metal, wood marks a little weaker. Mechanically functional, very good smooth bore is moderately oxidized and dark. Wood crisp with a good cartouche and scattered bumps, dings and mars.
