FIRST EDITION of "the first authoritative and comprehensive treatise in English on the relation between law and psychiatry, and the first American treatise on a psychological subject since the publication of Benjamin Rush's Medical Inquiries [1812]. Ray's work exerted a considerable influence on Anglo-American jurisprudence, particularly in the famous M'Naughton trial of 1843, which prompted the establishment of the M'Naughton Rules redefining the common law of insanity.
