REDI, Francesco (1626-1697). Autograph letter signed to the 'Principe di Toscana' [Grand Duke Ferdinando II de' Medici], 'dalla corte all'Ambrog[ia]na', 28 March 1687, on news of Grand Duke Cosimo III who is returning the following Saturday to conclude business with Monsieur Dupré; on sending the Abbot Gondi to Rome in the service of the 'Cardinale de' Medici' and on recalling him should the Prince decide to stay in France, 1¼ pages, small folio , with ownership stamp on verso (a few minute holes, one affecting signature, neat marginal repair); [ and ] an autograph letter signed from Lorenzo BELLINI (1643-1704), to an unnamed recipient, 24 November 1671, the doctor and anatomist reflecting on his own condition, 3 pages, 4to on a bifolium.

Redi, physician and friend of Ferdinand II and Cosimo III, held the position of Superintendent of the Pharmacy at the Medici court. Also a leading literary figure (see lot 144), Redi was renowned for his scientific discoveries, in particular his experiment in 1668 with maggots, one of the first steps taken to refute 'spontaneous generation'.
