This was a preliminary sketch for a Regency novel written in the mid 1890s when Conan Doyle steeped himself in details of the period before embarking on Rodney Stone (1896). It was first published in August 1900 in Frank Leslie's Popular Magazine , New York, vol. 50, pp. 327-33 and in Universal Magazine , January 1901, vol. 2, pp. 250-56.
