Captivating register from what was likely the leading, if not the only, hotel in the gold country community of Hammonton. There are some 20 to 28 names per page, with their home residence given and room number, as well as check in date and approximate time. The hotel customers hailed from towns and cities near and far - there are a number from San Francisco and nearby Marysville, but also from Los Angeles, Stockton, Chico, Cordova Alaska, Boise Idaho, England, Nevada City, and more. One of the registrants, a Chas. M. Skeehan, identifies himself as being with the "Mining & Scientific Press, S.F." Hammonton (formerly Dredgertown and Dredgerville), is an unincorporated community in Yuba County, California, located 3½ miles south of Browns Valley. The original name was due to gold dredging which took place in the nearby Yuba Goldfields. The current name is in honor of W.P. Hammon, gold-dredging company official. At the foot of the spine in gilt is the name of the manufacturer of the ledger, Hicks-Judd Co., Bookbinders, S.F. Other names in the register include: C.W. Medler, real estate San Francisco; Oliver N. Moxey, Realty, SF; L. E. Porter, of the Porter Gold and Silver Extraction Co., a famous Los Angeles mining engineer, etc. Condition: Some wear to extremities and joints, very good or better.
