REGIUS, Urbanus -- TURNER, William (translator) A comparison betwene the Old Learning and the Newe, translated out of Latin by Wyliam Turner , [colophon: Southwark, by James Nicolson for John Gough], 1537, 8°, second edition, collation: A-G8, H4, black letter, woodcut architectural title surround, one large and one small decorative initial (some soiling of margins, verso of D5 affected by paper fault), brown morocco by Riviere, ruled and tooled in blind, spine with raised bands titled in gilt in two compartments, g.e. [STC 20840.5: records only one copy in the Bodleian and one imperfect copy] Provenance : James Boulton (early ownership inscription on verso of title); other members of the Boulton and Boughton families, also Liz Cooke (inscriptions on blank verso of final leaf); Robert Rivière's invoice, made out to Mr. Fagg, dated London, 5. 9. 1928. See frontispiece for title page illustration. William Turner (d. 1568), divine, physician and botanist, became intimate with Gesner and others when travelling abroad in Henry VIII's reign; returning to England on the accession of Edward VI, he became chaplain and physician to the Duke of Somerset, M.P., prebendary of York, and Dean of Wells in 1550. He is known as the author of The Herbal (1551) which marks the start of scientific botany in England. He was suspended for nonconformity, 1564, and his religious controversial works forbidden to be read in England in English. The above translation was his first published work.
