REIMS 1775 -- [PICHON, Thomas Jean and Nicholas GOBET]. Sacre et Couronnement de Louis XVI Roi de France et de Navarre, a Rheims le 11 Juin 1775 . Paris: Vente and Patas, 1775.
REIMS 1775 -- [PICHON, Thomas Jean and Nicholas GOBET]. Sacre et Couronnement de Louis XVI Roi de France et de Navarre, a Rheims le 11 Juin 1775 . Paris: Vente and Patas, 1775. 4 o (248 x 190 mm). Half-title. Two engraved titles-pages, large engraved folding plan of Reims, 10 engraved double-page plates, 39 engraved costume plates and 14 engraved vignettes (lacking portrait, light spotting, folding plate with small tape repair on verso). Contemporary marbled calf, gilt triple fillet borders, gilt fleur-de-lis at each corner, centrally placed arms of Louis XVI on each cover, spine gilt in six compartments with fleur-de-lis ornaments, gilt lettering-piece (some minor drying and cracking). FIRST EDITION, LARGE PAPER ISSUE in 4s of the coronation of LOUIS XVI (1754-1793), King of France, in Reims on 11 June 1775. The double-page plates show the emotional and solemn coronation ceremony at the cathedral in Reims, as well as the festive dinner taking place after the coronation with Marie Antoinette in attendance on the small balcony above the room. The costume plates illustrate three costumes for the king and the attire for such notable figures as the Duke of Normandy, the Duke of Burgundy, and the Master of Ceremonies. The adoration of the French citizens towards their beloved king and queen was evident in their enthusiastic response to the pomp and celebration surrounding the coronation, little realizing the terror and bloodshed that would occur less than 20 years later. This copy does not include the portrait of Louis XVI found in some copies. Berlin 3023; Cohen-De Ricci 785-786 ("... les épreuves sont très supérieures à celles de l'in-8 et les figures ont des encadrements."); Lipperheide Sg 24; Ruggieri 606; Vinet 529.
