RENOIR, (Pierre) Auguste (1841-1919). Autograph letter signed ('Renoir') to an unidentified correspondent ('Mon cher ami' - Paul Bérard), hotel du Parc et de la Meditérranée, Monte Carlo, 'December', incompletely dated [late December 1883], 3 pages, 8vo , on a bifolium (short tear to outer margin of second leaf, touching one word, slight smudging to blank page). RENOIR WITH MONET ON THE RIVIERA. Renoir comments appreciatively on the beauties of the landscape, though remarking ironically on the dangers of the chilly evenings after the heat of the day - 'they send invalids here to finish them off quickly. Exquisite country for their heirs'; in its attractions for an artist, however, it is inspiring, with extraordinary finesse in its shades of colour. Renoir reports that Monet, who arrived convinced that he would not like the midi , sits 'en contemplation' all day. 'Malheureusement notre pauvre palette ne repond pas. Les beaux tons mordorés de la mer deviennent bien lourds sur la toile malgré tout le mal qu'on se donne'. Still, if the good weather continues Renoir will try to bring back one or two paintings. In a postscript he writes of the country around Hyères, 'des montagnes douces comme de la planche', and wryly reports the loss of one hundred sous at the Casino. Renoir travelled on the French and Italian Riviera with Monet from 16 to 31 December 1883, an expedition which was intended to serve as a preliminary reconaissance for a longer painting trip together in the new year. In the event however Monet returned alone in January 1884. The letter is described as being to Paul Bérard in Thierry Bodin, sale catalogue 276. Renoir's many letters to his close friend and patron Bérard have been described as 'the most intimate and revealing of his entire correspondence' (Barbara Ehrlich White, Renoir, His Life, Art & Letters , 1984).
