Title: Report of the Commissioners and Evidence Taken by the Committee on Mines and Mining of the House of Representatives of the United States, in Regard to the Sutro Tunnel, together with the Arguments and Report of the Committee, Recommending a Loan by the Government in Aid of the Construction of Said Work Author: Sutro, Adolph Place: Washington D.C. Publisher: M'Gill & Witherow Date: 1872 Description: [8], 988 pp. 9x5½, original gilt-lettered & stamped blue cloth (with gilt design of a miner), all edges gilt. First Edition. Elaborate production of Executive Document 15, 42nd Congress, 2nd Session, evidently intended for presentation to interested parties. In addition to recommending the federal loan, the work gives a discussion of its feasibility, cost, construction time, benefits to the mines, etc. Paher describes this as "prime source material." This copy has a newspaper obituary of Sutro tipped to the front free endpaper, underneath which is a rubberstamp of the Gold Hill Miners Union, and early ink notation "Gold Hill Miners Union." The newsclipping has caused darkening to the endpapers. Posthumous book label of historian John Sandoval affixed to the front flyleaf facing the title-page. Paher 2028. Lot Amendments Condition: Some rubbing to page edges and extremities, stains to rear cover; else very good or better. Item number: 264221
