Superb survey of the Colorado River, with exceptional illustrations after Möllhausen and others and including reports on the geology, botany and zoology by John Strong Newberry, Asa Grey, Spencer Fullerton Baird and others. Wagner-Camp notes that "William Goetzmann calls Lieutenant Ives' complete report, 'The best by far of these individual reports... It is a long, carefully written journal, consciously literary but with a maximum amount of attention to scientific observation....'" Warren Heckrotte notes that "Appendix D presents remarks on the preparation of the maps." The two geological maps issued only in Senate copies are often not present even there. The binding is possibly a presentation binding. The expert repair of the binding is by Sandra Good.
