Republican Craftwork: A very unusual Chessboard painted from behind on a sheet of heavy gloss, the squares painted din green and gold. inscribed in the borders 'Irish Republic, Easter Week, 1916,' & decorated with tri-colours and shamrocks, approx. 42cms (16 1/2'') square, in the original carved wooden frame. A little wear, & some worming to the frame, but generally v. good. *Inscribed on the back W IRWING/ IRVING IRISH VOLUNTEER * Chess was undoubtedly one of the diversions used by De Valera and others to while away the time while detained in Lincoln & elsewhere. The use of heavy glass is unusual (since it could have been used to provide a weapon), so maybe this is not a prison manufacture. A very unusual & interesting item.
