Original photographs, discharge documents, reunion ribbons, clippings and postcards relating to the Civil War service of Richard A. Green of Portland, IN, formerly of the 11th Indiana Cavalry, Co. B and a prisoner at the Confederate POW Camp at Meridian, MO. Displayed in a 53" x 28" 19th century molded frame with contemporary gold finish, the archive includes an original CDV image of the young Mr. Green taken in 1865, soon after his release from prison. He is show as a shirtless youth suffering from the effect of malnutrition and mistreatment. A photo of the 3rd reunion of the 11th Cavalry and a portrait of Mr. Green in later life are also present. Additionally, both federal and state discharge papers, two reunion ribbons, a news paper clipping and three related period postcards are included. All are held in a contemporary mat with extensive descriptive text. Green's Model 1860 cavalry saber is also included with the group. The curved fullered blade measures 35.25" and is in a mottled gray finish, the obverse ricasso is stamped "U.S / J.M / 1864", the reverse is maker marked "MANSFIELD & LAMB / FORESTDALE, RI." The hilt has a brass three branch guard and Phrygian helmet pommel, grip wrapped in black leather and brass twist wire. The top of the guard is bent forward and the branches are also slightly bent. Complete with an iron scabbard, the finish now turning dark plume. This archive reportedly came directly from Green's descendants and come with a folder of documentation.
