Worn and soiled, laid into a picture frame. After the failure of the 1848 Rising, the leaders were held at Richmond Prison for some time pending trial and deportation. Under the custom of the time, they were allowed access to friends and supporters, and signed various books and other documents. All three were sentenced to death, commuted to transportation to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania), where O'Brien remained until his release in 1854. Meagher and MacManus escaped in Tasmania and got away to the United States, where Meagher distinguished himself on the Union side in the Civil War. Sold as seen, w.a.f.
