ROGER BRODERS MARSEILLE / PORT DE L'AFRIQUE DU NORD. 1929. 391/2x245/8 inches. Lucien Serre, Paris. Condition A: minor restoration in image. In 1928 Broders' talent entered its "best period and he produces masterpieces which appear at the Pantheon of travel posters. He is able to simplify, to stylize the subject without letting it lose its charm or warmth--a feat which Cassandre, a master in this field, was never able to achieve" (Perry/Broders p.13). This geometrically appealing image manages to convey the hustle and bustle of the harbor, yet creates a stylized order out of the chaos. Broders' landscapes are generally considered less popular than his Art Deco images featuring people, but this magnificent Machine Age image is definitely an exception. Broders 81, Perry/Broders p. 31, La Mer p. 189.
