FootnotesThe reference 6150 was introduced in 1953 and was the first Rolex to feature 'Explorer' on the dial after the name was registered in Geneva on the 26th January 1953. It was the historical expedition to reach the summit of Mount Everest by Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay that catapulted the Explorer into the legendary status it now enjoys.
As with most early 6150s, the gilt dial of the current lot has Precision printed rather than Explorer as it was not until after the Everest exhibition that Rolex began to apply the word Explorer to the dial. As such this reference is often designated as a 'Pre-Explorer'. The current lot features a case starting 944**** indicating that this is a particularly early example of this desirable reference and also houses the early A296 calibre (also known as a calibre 775).
