A carved marble figure of an eagle on a rectangular plinth; the bird with wings folded to the rear, gripping claws and feather detail to the chest and wings; on the front face of the plinth the carved inscription in seriffed capitals 'M TITIO / MAXIM[.] / [.]TER[..]'. Marble, 1.2 kg, 17 cm. Very fine condition. Rare. Provenance Private collection, Suffolk, UK; acquired in the 1990's. Footnotes A prominent Roman named Marcus Titius was a consul and military commander in the last century BC, involved in the struggle between Octavian, Mark Anthony and Pompey.
