ROMAN SEVERAN HEAD OF A GIRL Early 3rd century AD A carved marble head with the attributes of an infant including a rounded forehead, a fleshy nose and chubby cheeks; with linear cut on the eyebrows, the chin with two drilled holes just below the lower lip; the grave expression conferred by marked heavy eyelids and pressed lips; one ear completely modelled and the other incomplete because of its closeness to a now lost panel behind; behind the child’s right ear a short curl (typical of the Severan period); hair with a fillet with two lobes, mounted on a custom-made stand. 276 grams, 15.5cm including stand (6"). Condition Fine condition. Provenance Property of a Swiss collector; acquired from André Cichos, Kunsthandlung der Antike, Bad Zwischenahn, Germany, April 2007; previously in a private collection, Duisburg, Germany.
