ROOSEVELT, Franklin D. Portrait photograph labeled on verso in an unidentified hand "Franklin Delano Roosevelt September 1895," in later blue envelope INSCRIBED BY ELEANOR ROOSEVELT for "John" (John A. Roosevelt). Original photograph, 5 x 3 in., including decorative card mount with imprint of the photographer, O'Neil of New Bedford. An uncommon photograph. F.D.R. AT GROTON SCHOOL, 1897 A fine early portrait depicting the 15-year-old future President seated, one hand on his thigh, in suit, vest and white bow-tie, looking to the right. Roosevelt had enrolled at Groton School in Groton, Massachusetts at the age of 14. Later, the Groton headmaster, Dr. Endicott Peabody, recalled that "He was a quiet, satisfactory boy of more than ordinary intelligence, taking a good position in his Form [class] but not brilliant. Athletically he was rather slight for success. We all liked him."
