Ross's attempts in 1818 to negotiate the North-West passage had been frustrated by the apparent discovery of a range of mountains blocking the way which he named the Croker Mountains. Doubts as to the existence of these mountains began to circulate at the time that Ross published his account of the voyage. Sabine, who had been one of the scientific members of the expedition published comments severely contradicting their existence to which Ross replied in the present work.
