ROSS Sir John An explanation of Captain Sabine's remarks on the late voyage of disovery to Baffin Bay ... 1st edition, pp. [iv] 53, [iii], with the half-title, 8vo., London: John Murray 1819 Note: Sabin 73371. Ross's attempts in 1818 to negotiate the North-West passage had been frustrated by the apparent discovery of a range of mountains blocking the way which he named the Croker Mountains. Doubts as to the existence of these mountains began to circulate at the time that Ross published his account of the voyage. Sabine, who had been one of the scientific members of the expedition published comments severely contradicting their existence to which Ross replied in the present work. A subsequent expedition under the command of Parry confirmed that Ross had been in error No 8 in A collection of pamphlets bound in 2 volumes, half calf, rubbed, joints splitting, 8vo., various dates, which include: 1. Biographical sketch of Henry, Lord Viscount Melville, Edinburgh, 1811. 2. Papers relating to the action between HM sloop Little Belt and the US frigate President, London, 1811. 3. Three letters relating to Lord Lovat, etc. [n.d.]. 4. Lives of various naval officers (unidentified). 5. Report of the Committee of Secrecy. London, 1799. 6. Sturt. The real picture of France in the year 1809. London, 1810? (lacking titlepage). 7. Jennings.
